<image:title>Coffee Shop Reviews | Discover Your Next Favourite Coffee Shop - Rösterei Vier - The most complete coffee shop in Düsseldorf - Introduction</image:title>
<image:caption>For the most complete coffee shop in Düsseldorf, Rösterei Vier is my top recommendation. The headquarters is located right in the middle of the Altstadt, attracting hundreds of visitors daily. It’s split into three main parts: a cafe where you order your drinks and a few tables to sit down; a multipurpose roasting area with additional tables, a second counter and a record player setup; and finally a showroom with its own entrance, showcasing their range of beans and equipment. Their range of beans is modest but caters to all kinds of coffee lovers. From their beloved Italo Pop blend with chocolatey and spicy notes to their fresh, sweet and clear roast from Luis Sánchez Perdomo in Colombia, each roast is curated for a specific purpose. In the past, they had a few locations scattered all over Düsseldorf, but have decided to operate from this sole location to offer the best experience possible.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I’ve only visited one coffee shop that serves their beans so far, and it is absolutely worth the trip. Graination is Toronto’s leading photo lab but serves exclusively Hatch roasted beans in their cafe that greets you at the entrance. It’s located just outside of Chinatown, so it’s very accessible if you are in the area. I had a fantastic experience before the shop closed. The barista was extremely, knowledgeable, attentive and engaging, and even offered a cup from a sample a friend brought in.</image:caption>

<image:title>Coffee Reviews | Honest Reflections & Roaster Insights - Coffee Review: Pr_cess - Gesha - Castellon 100g - LIMITED - Coffee Review</image:title>
<image:caption>I discovered this roaster at my local coffee shop, No Worries, a relatively new addition to the Düsseldorf coffee scene. They’re a multi-roaster serving some of the best coffees in the world. Their recent collaboration with Process Coffee caught my attention with their VHS-inspired packaging. When I popped in, I was disappointed to see that the VHS “tapes” were no longer available, but the 100g tubes were still there. After reading the label and realizing this wasn’t a cheap purchase, I mustered up the courage to tap away and bring it home. For coffees like these, I ensure I set up the best conditions at home, namely replacing my Brita filter, cleaning out the grinder, and paying more attention to the brewing process. The result was a fragrant, floral brew that offered layers of complexity. Upon the second brew, the cherry notes stood out, in addition to a rum-like mouthfeel. Brews like these kickstart my day with energy and peace. While it’s not a daily cup, I would surely serve this to coffee connoisseurs and nerds like myself if they want to taste something beyond their daily cup. My Rating: 9/10</image:caption>

<image:caption>Open since 1986, Hitsville is the oldest surviving independent record store in the city. Founded within Düsseldorf’s punk scene, the shop is especially known for its strong focus on punk, hardcore, indie, alongside rock, jazz, classical, and even tango. Their convenient location in the heart of the Alstadt is a great place for visitors to stop by and pick up a souvenir on wax. They’ve got a wide selection of used records, many of which you can get for as little as 2€. With plenty of rarities displayed on the wall, Hitsville caters to the palette of all kinds of record lovers. <image:caption>If there’s one place I would recommend anyone to find a record in Düsseldorf, it’s at the Trödelmarkt (flea market) on Aachenerplatz. This bustling flea market takes place every Saturday and is a haven for all antique, vintage clothing, and record hunters. With live music accompanying a morning coffee at Café Sperrmull around noon, spirits are always lifted up. Pro-tip: There are three trustworthy areas I would recommend: Right at the entrance of the tent, there is a modest selection of fairly priced used records and CDs greeting each visitor. If nothing floats your boat, you can hop on right in and enjoy the free live music that you can already hear before you enter. Right at the very back of the tent is an American who has built up quite an impressive range. You can get some pretty affordable records, especially if you bundle up—but be cautious, as the condition can vary quite significantly. Towards the back, on the right side (photographed here), is where I find the best stuff. The collector is extremely knowledgeable and sorts his records very well. With a healthy mix of budget records, CDs, and rarities, you’re bound to come home with a special record. For a list of their live music acts, check out their website. <image:title>City Guide | Düsseldorf, Germany - Düsseldorf’s Best Crates to Dig Through</image:title>
<image:caption>With a relatively recent move to the METRO parking lot, the German equivalent of Costco, this flea market takes place once a month and brings together old souls and fresh heads. Most records you can find here are found in 1€ bins, but there are a few sellers who take pride and care of their collection. Pro-tip: The easiest way to find quality sellers is if they have sturdy crates and cover their records with plastic. Since it’s an outdoor market, they need to protect their records in all weather conditions. For official dates, check out their website. Schlüterstraße 3, 40235 Düsseldorf</image:caption>

<image:title>City Guide | Düsseldorf, Germany - Düsseldorf’s Best Crates to Dig Through</image:title>
<image:caption>This is Düsseldorf’s largest flea market and unfortunately takes place monthly and is limited to the warmer seasons. And with a massive space for private vendors to sell their prized possessions, you’re bound to find a few record sellers with some solid collections. Quality varies from table to table, but I’ve come away with a few extremely affordable gems. It’s located near the Merkur-Spiel Arena, and so it’s quite the walk from the U-Bahn station, so if you can drive, I recommend that. For official dates, check out this website. <image:caption>Year Released: 1964 Country: Germany Format: Vinyl, LP, Album, Reissue, Gatefold Genre: Jazz Style: Bossa nova, Latin jazz Favourite Tracks: The Girl from Ipanema, Desafinado, Corcovado For jazz lovers, this album needs no introduction. It brought the beautiful bossa nova sound to American ears and has recently made its way to mine. This is one of my all-time favourite jazz albums, and fittingly, this was the intro record to the curated playlist of my record cafe birthday party. It’s extremely accessible, it’s the perfect blend of American and Latin sounds, sparking the curiosity of some of my guests. The vocals from Astrud Gilberto are timeless and the perfect way to kick off a cosy afternoon or a late evening. I picked this record up at Pure Soul in Hamburg, one of the most impressive collections of records I’ve ever seen. The shop has an impressive collection of rare singles, but also a plethora of widely acclaimed records. My only knock on this pressing is that I found it a bit quiet upon the first spin, but it’s easy to overlook considering how phenomenal the album is.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Year Released: 1976-1981 Country: Germany Format: Vinyl, LP Genre: Pop Style: Schlager, Chanson, Ballad Favourite Tracks: Guten Morgen Sonnenschein, Weiße Rosen Aus Athen (White Rose Of Athens), Für Wen Blühen Die Rosen If you suggest playing Schlager at any party, you are likely to get eye rolls and will be hit with flashbacks to that time you drank a bit too much at Oktoberfest or put on a silly costume at Karneval. This is why it confuses me that Nana Mouskouri’s music is sometimes categorized as Schlager on Discogs. The overlap is likely because she sang in German, her choruses were catchy, and often sang about love and positive themes. However, Mouskouri offers much more than tunes to get drunk to. More fittingly, I would characterize her style as Chanson, similar to that of Edith Piaf, Ballad, with a hint of jazz. If you’re unfamiliar with Mouskouri, you were likely raised outside of Europe or below the age of 50. As someone who doesn’t fit that demographic, it was her Guten Morgen Sonnenschein feature in the hit German series, Cassandra, that unironically caught my attention. While the song is filled with uplifting lyrics, the ominous, dark tones in the movie gave it a whole new connotation. I ended up learning that she is the top-selling female artist of all time, behind Madonna, a technically unofficial title, due to the inconsistency of sources. Having been born in Greece and lived in Germany and France, her polyglot skills have catalyzed her claim to fame by recording albums in over 15 languages. Upon a deeper listen and going through the rabbit holes of Kleinanzeigen, I ended up buying a collection of some of her most well-known records. To those who smirk at the thought of German pop music from the 70s, I encourage you to take another listen and realize how talented Mouskouri actually is. Her classical training at a young age has led her to be one of the most talented female singers of all time, reaching all corners of the world. For the full list of Nana Mouskouri records, check out my Discogs collection.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Year Released: 1981 Country: Italy Format: Vinyl, LP Genre: Electronic, Rock, Pop Style: Ballad, Europop Favourite Tracks: Sarà Perché Ti Amo, M'Innamoro Di Te, Come Vorrei Don’t let the attire and moustache fool you. This group is one of the most beloved pop groups from Italy. And with every group in the pop category comes a group of critics that reject some of the cheesy themes. However, with the resurgence of their hit, Sarà Perché Ti Amo, they’ve captured a new audience and a new fan in me. Beyond their catchy hit, I’ve come to thoroughly enjoy their ballad side with tracks like M'Innamoro Di Te and Come Vorrei, they’ve got me singing in a language I barely understand. I purchased this record on a trip to Milan earlier this year at a pretty unassuming record shop, Metropolis Due. Sarà Perché Ti Amo was stuck in my head all trip, and when the record stared me right in the face and didn’t come with a hefty price tag, it satisfied my purchase craving. The recent propensity to play this record came about when I stumbled upon the Instagram account of Disco Bambino, a self-acclaimed “music curator and scholar of Italian 70s and 80s disco culture.” The reel featuring nostalgic groovy tunes I stumbled upon captivated me and led me down a rabbit hole of Italo disco, categorized by soulful, funky grooves and the presence of synths. Additionally, I recently stumbled upon a local Italian DJ, Manu, whose setlist at Büdchentag had my hips swinging.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Year Released: 1972 Country: Germany (1980) Format: Vinyl, LP, Reissue Genre: Funk / Soul Style: Soul Favourite Tracks: You Are The Sunshine Of My Life, Maybe Your Baby, You And I, Superstition Widely known as his “Classic Period” between 1972-1976, Talking Book marked a turning point in Stevie’s career, where he took full rein on the artistry of the album. His innovative use of synthesizers and electric keyboards, combined with his signature soul and funky style, led to some of his greatest hits of all time. Before you even get to his all-time hit, Superstition, you’re introduced to one of the greatest LP sides in his discography with the uplifting You Are The Sunshine Of My Life, followed by the groovy and infectious Maybe Your Baby and heartfelt You And I. I was on a Stevie Wonder groove throughout August, perhaps due to the positive attitude I had heading into my 30s or the burst of good weather, which doesn’t come too often in this part of Germany. Featured here is the US pressing with braille on the cover, which I find such a unique detail. Unfortunately, I’m stuck with a German reissue, but I can’t complain about having this classic in my catalogue.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Year Released: 1966 Country: Germany Format: Vinyl, LP, Reissue Genre: Classical Style: Romantic Tschaikowsky’s legacy is widely attributed to his ballets, despite composing a plethora of operas and symphonies. Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty are the ones that typically stand out, and for good reason. The poise and elegance of the pieces are timeless. Beyond the music, the waltz associated with the Swan Dance has also stood the test of time, making it a masterpiece in classical music and dance. This recording was conducted at the Warsaw Philharmonic, one of Poland’s most esteemed musical institutions, by Witold Rowicki, a significant contributor to the Polish artistic development at the time. I picked this up at my local donation store simply because I recognized the pieces and found the cover pleasant and graceful.</image:caption>

<image:title>Now Brewing - Now Brewing: August 2025</image:title>
<image:caption>August was a unique month for me, as I celebrated the coveted 30-year milestone, where I fulfilled the cliché of buying an espresso machine. I did this in time for my birthday celebration where I turned my apartment into a record cafe. This has been a goal of mine for a while, and I’m happy I got to do it with my closest friends in Düsseldorf on such a special day. The good news is that we already had somewhat of a cafe setup in the kitchen and a record setup in the living room. The majority of the work was spent on the design, ingredient sourcing and of course…cleaning. To spare you the boredom, I’ll stick to talking about the coffee. This event was a valid excuse to stock up on some good coffee. I focused on supporting local coffee shops, but also sourced based on the drinks I wanted to prepare. The best thing I did was to send out a survey prior to the event because, to my surprise, the majority of my friends preferred matcha. But for my coffee lovers, there was no shortage. I offered a range of espresso and filter coffees for all kinds of tastes, which I’m more than happy to talk about.</image:caption>

<image:title>Now Brewing - Now Brewing: August 2025 - Colombia Gesha Omni - Friedhats</image:title>
<image:caption>Roaster: Friedhats Country of Origin: Colombia Variety: Gesha Notes: Elderflower, Blood orange, and White peach Friedhats is one of the most recognizable coffee roasters in Europe, not only for its quirky and unconventional packaging, but also for how beloved their coffee is. As soon as I see their label at a coffee shop, I immediately shift my attention and try to get my hands on their beans. My friend gifted me this Gesha as they were the guest roaster at my local coffee shop, Stoak. Now while Gesha’s are known for their complex flavours and high price tag, this one was unlike any Gesha I’ve tried. While I expected fruity notes, I got a lot of tea-like notes leaning into the early grey direction, with a subtle citrus aftertaste. The body is light and easy on the tongue, making for an enjoyable sip as an everyday coffee.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Roaster: Five Elephant Country of Origin: El Salvador & Brazil Varietal: Red Bourbon/Catuai Process: N/A Notes: Cocoa nibs, orange, chamomile If you’re planning on getting your first home espresso machine and are considering Sage (or Breville), what might tip you over the edge is knowing you get two free bags of 250g beans. I was fortunate enough to receive the house blend from one of my favourite Berlin-based roasters, Five Elephant. They are very well-known worldwide and attract a wide range of coffee lovers. This blend is very approachable and a great bean for me to make mistakes with. From dialing in the espresso grind to learning how to make latte art, the “free” beans made me feel less guilty about the waste. In terms of taste, it has a chocolatey note with a subtle hint of acidity, which may catch you off guard if you’re accustomed to a darker roast. I found it pairs a lot better with dairy milk compared to dairy alternatives, as the sweetness can bring out too much acidity for my liking.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Roaster: Rösterei Vier Country of Origin: Yemen & India Varietal: Heirloom & SLN 274 Process: Natural & Washed Notes: Nuts, Dried fruit, Spices For those based in Düsseldorf, you should be aware Rösterei Vier. I dubbed it “The most complete coffee shop in Düsseldorf” for a reason. Their coffee range is approachable to most and caters to connoisseurs. They roast in-house, have a solid record setup, have strong enough wi-fi to work remotely, and have a wide range of seating. This bean was specifically recommended to me by co-owner Mateusz Petlinski, whom I’ve gotten to know recently. When I asked for a dark roast that caters to a wide range of coffee drinkers for my batch brew, he recommended this one with no hesitation—and I can see why. As a batch brew, it received compliments from my friends, but when I ran out of the Five Elephant beans, it was my go-to espresso blend. I believe the label, progressive, was chosen as it is typically enjoyed as an espresso but tastes just as good as a filter coffee, blending (no pun intended) into all sorts of brewing methods. You really can’t go wrong with any of their beans, as they put a lot of care into every roast, the origin story of the bean, and above all, serve their customers with a smile, especially Mateusz.</image:caption>

<image:title>Now Brewing - Now Brewing: August 2025 - Saint Tropez - DAK</image:title>
<image:caption>Roaster: DAK Country of Origin: Ethiopia Varietal: Heirloom Process: Washed Notes: Lemon sorbet, Peach iced tea, White flowers Crossing the border into the Netherlands is the powerhouse roaster, DAK, out of Amsterdam. This household roaster is one of my all-time favourite roasters based on the high quality they bundle up into their minimal packaging. Most beans are packed into a white and black box, so this one caught my eye. The name “Saint Tropez” and the yellow stripes immediately gave me summer vibes, and that is exactly what I wanted for my cold brew. I recently purchased the Hario Cold Brew Coffee Pot Mizudashi, which prepares up to 1L of refreshing cold brew coffee, and I have zero regrets doing so. The setup is extremely easy and serves an excellent cold brew with the right bean. The Saint Tropez roast offered a refreshing citrus taste with a bold body and notes of peach. The coffee hit of the day was our Cold Brew Yuzu Tonic, which paired excellently with this bean’s notes. Whether enjoyed cold or hot, I can recommend this roast all year round (assuming it’s in harvesting season, of course).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Roaster: Das Cøffe Country of Origin: Colombia Varietal: Castillo Process: Sugarcane Decaf Washed Notes: Orange, nuts, caramel One type of bean I try to have in stock is a decaf roast to curb my caffeine addiction. When visiting my favourite local coffee shop, Cøffe, I knew I would find something I would enjoy. This roast is an omni roast, which tastes great as a filter and is an excellent espresso roast as well. As an espresso, it tastes slightly lighter than what I prefer and as a filter, it tastes darker than what I prefer. However, as a decaf omniroast, there have to be some sacrifices. Nevertheless, I can’t complain about this roast’s versatility and its contribution to my good nights of sleep.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Roaster: Lightroast Country of Origin: Peru Varietal: Mixed Process: Washed Notes: Green apple, Lime, Bergamot, Orange, Marzipan The innovative local roaster, Lightroast, has no shortage of experimental roasts. However, this bean doesn’t use a roasting process that takes up two lines of text to explain. It’s a simple washed bean that gives off a pleasant acidity and doesn’t come with a high price tag. I purchased this towards the end of July and kicked off my August with a bang, in preparation for my birthday cafe experience. It’s light, bright and juicy, as the name suggests, and is an excellent everyday coffee.</image:caption>

<image:title>Now Brewing - Now Brewing: July 2025 - Introduction</image:title>
<image:caption>Coming off a recent trip to Greece, I sourced a wide variety of coffee from Canada, the US and Greece thanks to my plugs (aka my family). The heat has been rising here in Germany, so I’ve been experimenting with cold brewing methods to keep my palette satisfied and my body refreshed. My method of choice this summer has been the Puck Puck Aeropress extension, an affordable, yet effective accessory that turns the already versatile Aeropress into a summer hero. From Nespresso capsules to pre-ground blends, I’ve been blessed with a diverse range of caffeine to keep me alert when my energy starts to wane this summer.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Roaster: Stereo Coffee Roasters, CA Country of Origin: Colombia Varietal: Geisha & Castillo Process: Washed, anaerobic, thermal shock Notes: Peach, pear, ginger, lychee, aromatic, flowers, tea, juicy On my hunt to explore the best roasters in Canada, I stumbled upon Stereo coffee roasters, based in Toronto, who are a force to be reckoned with. The packaging is loud and colourful, which is sure to turn some heads. I’ve been drinking this as a cold brew, using my Aeropress and PuckPuck accessory and has been cooling me down in the 30+ degree weather. The fruitiness packs a punch and is currently my comfort coffee of choice.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Roaster: Onyx Coffee Lab, US Country of Origin: Bolivia Varietal: Catuai Process: Lactic Washed Notes: Mandarin Orange, Brown Sugar, Melon Milk Chocolate If you’re in the coffee game, Onyx Coffee Lab needs no introduction. I was flabbergasted when I found out my brother was invited to a wedding near the main roaster and was quick to give him a call. In case you’re based in Europe, they recently started to roast out of the Netherlands, so you can give their beans a try without having to worry about the cross-continental shipping costs.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Roaster: Coffee Island, GR Country of Origin: Brazil , Colombia , Ethiopia Variety: 80% Arabica, 20% Robusta Notes: Vanilla, chocolate, hazelnut, french caramel I picked up these beans rather spontaneously in Santorini, while strolling along the main road in Thira (which has the best and cheapest coffee in Santorini, by the way). The barista suggested this roast based on my fruity preferences and was surprised to learn it was a blend from different countries, but also different varieties. It’s fantastic as a cold pour over and is reminiscent of a fermented coffee, but it’s actually the oils that were tampered with to give it that unique, layered flavour.</image:caption>

<image:title>Now Brewing - Now Brewing: July 2025 - Coconut Vanilla - Nespresso</image:title>
<image:caption>Regardless of your opinion of Nespresso, they’ve undoubtedly influenced coffee culture in a unique way. At my local nespresso boutique, I’ve noticed the demographic is older and appears wealthy, which suggests it satisfies the desire to drink an espresso without the hassle of preparing it in a traditional espresso machine. It’s simple and gets the job done. This variety is rather new and wowed me. As the image suggests, it’s best served iced with milk, but recently it’s been my pre-workout coffee of choice—and I take it black. It’s extremely refreshing and the notes of coconut are perfect for summer.</image:caption>
