Why this coffee roaster is underrated

Berlin’s coffee scene is, by far, the most mature and diverse in all of Germany. However, I would say it’s still growing, and new kids on the block are popping out of nowhere. When Rozali Coffee reached out to me, I had never heard of them, nor had I seen them at any coffee festivals or mentioned by any coffee aficionados I’ve met.

What immediately stood out to me was their simple and focused website—especially their About page.

No fluff—just great coffee made simple.

The founder, David Rozali, has over a decade of coffee experience, including a certification as a Q Arabica Grader and being the Head Roaster and Head of Production for The Barn Coffee Roasters.

Their packaging is clean with signature royal green and gold tones as the base. The cover features all the information you need to know to understand the taste profile, with a QR code to learn more about the bean. On the back, they seamlessly insert a card that expands the origin of the bean, providing a more comprehensive description.

Finally, with every bean I tried, I was pleasantly surprised. Each bean was true to its note descriptions, and each had its distinct character. The selection is diverse enough for all palettes but not overwhelming. After trying each roast, I believe they can go toe-to-toe with any Berlin-based roaster and look forward to hearing more from them in the future.

My personal coffee recommendations

I’ve had the pleasure of trying a variety of their beans, ranging from espresso to filter roasts—daily coffee to rarities. These are my honest reviews and recommendations of beans I recommend you try if you’re just discovering Rozali Coffee.

rozali coffee peru edinson luis estela

Origin: Peru

Varietal: Catuai, Caturra

Process: Natural

Notes: Plum, Red Apple, Sweet Berries, Cinnamon

Roast: Espresso

Review: This bean might scare some, but it gives me a smile with each sip. Fruity espresso notes are not everyone’s cup of tea, but I truly enjoy them if done well. The berry-like notes particularly stand out but aren’t overly acidic. It took me quite a few tries to dial in the espresso and so the first batches did come out underextracted and were more acidic. But when pulled correctly, you’re met with a rich sweetness and spicy aftertaste.

Origin: Colombia

Varietal: Popayán, Cauca

Process: Sugar Cane

Notes: Honey, Milk Chocolate, Creamy

Roast: Espresso

Review: Don’t let decaf fool you. This roast uses a natural sugar cane process that preserves the sweetness of the bean, unlike typical decaffeination methods that heat up the bean. This bean is packed with flavour, offers a creamy texture, pairing really well with milk. It has put many of my previous caffeinated roasts to shame with how pleasantly bold it is.

rozali coffee peru geisha lorenzo arbildo ubillus

Origin: Peru

Varietal: Geisha

Process: Washed

Notes: Apple Blossom, Perfumey Florals, Vanilla, Pear

Roast: Filter

Review: This is one of my favourite daily coffees all year. While not as groundbreaking as some geishas I’ve tried, the floral and appley notes are easy on the tongue. It’s light, with a low body, and is the perfect roast for a cold brew as the weather heats up.

Origin: Colombia

Varietal: Geisha

Process: Washed

Notes: Peach Candy, Cranberry, Hibiscus, Violet Floral, Grape

Roast: Filter

Review: I messed this one up. I waited too long to open this one up. It ended up tasting a bit flat. I got more floral/grape notes and not so much of the peach that I expected. This is a learning to treat a high-quality roast with the utmost care.
